[Smells Like News] Genevieve Cook, Ex-Girlfriend of President Obama, Reveals His "Sexual Warmth" in New Book

Genevieve Cook, an ex-girlfriend of President Obama, shares some intimate details about their relationship in a new book about the Commander-in-Chief.

Barack Obama: The Story, by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist David Maraniss, is the most thorough account of the President's life not written by Obama.

Vanity Fair published excerpts Wednesday. While The Story contains no sordid, shocking tales of impropriety, it portrays Obama as extremely ambitious.

Obama's autobiography Dreams From My Father, while generally true, makes him look less calculating and motivated by his own career, in other words.

Barack Obama: The Story also goes into much greater detail about his early life, including romantic relationships, such as that with Genevieve Cook.

Using Obama’s writings and ex-girlfriends’ diaries, Maraniss paints a picture of Obama as an intense, conflicted and sometimes brooding intellectual.

It was that intelligence that drew Cook to Obama after a chance meeting at that East Village apartment gathering, according to Maraniss' book.

The future President, who in 1983 was a recent graduate of Columbia University, began chatting up the assistant teacher at a party that Christmas.

Obama apparently earned Cook’s endorsement, as they went on a date just days later and she spent that night at his tiny Manhattan apartment.

While sitting on an orange beanbag chair, the two bonded over the time each spent in Indonesia as youths, then exchanged phone numbers.

“I think maybe he cooked me dinner,” she wrote. “Then we went and talked in his bedroom. And then I spent the night. It all felt very inevitable."

Cook remembers that Barack Obama also used to spend Sundays in his room wearing a sarong, drinking coffee and solving crossword puzzles.

She described the room as a “a mixture of smells that so strongly speak of his presence, his liveliness, his habits ... running sweat, Brut spray deodorant, smoking, eating raisins, sleeping, breathing.”

And while Cook wrote about Obama’s “sexual warmth,” she felt he sometimes kept her at arm’s length ... and when she said “I love you,” he often responded “thank you” rather than “I love you, too.”

Barack first met his future wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, in 1989.

[Smells Like News] Mumford & Sons Finish Sigh No More Follow-Up ... Probably

'We're done recording it, but if we listen back ... and discover it's sh--, we'll just start again,' Mumford's Ben Lovett says of new album.

It's been a long time in the making — like, well over a year — but Mumford & Sons have finally finished the follow-up to their breakout Sigh No More album ... sort of.

In a new interview with the NME, Mumford's Ben Lovett says the new album is finished; although in keeping with the band's policy, there's a pretty good chance they might still go back and re-record the entire thing.

"We're done recording it," Lovett said. "But if we listen back while we're mixing and discover it's sh--, we'll just start again. We're not going to put it out until it's good enough."

Mumford have been working on the new album for the entirety of 2011 — in between barn-storming railway tours, of course — though they've always maintained that they've felt no pressure to rush the recording. Quite the opposite, in fact, as frontman Marcus Mumford told MTV News late last year.

"We're still recording. We don't really like to put any boundaries on it; we'll keep going until it's right," he said. "It's definitely a different experience from the first one, as it should be, I think. But it's been challenging in all the right ways. It's going well.

"I think we just want the songs to be good, and to sound right, and to feel like we've expressed everything as straightforwardly and honestly as we can," he continued. "And we're working towards that."

They've also used their live shows as a way of road-testing the new material — including a haunting ballad called "Ghosts" — which has been crucial in shaping (and editing) the still-untitled follow-up album.

"For us, that's a really helpful way of writing, and performing the song ideas that we have live is a crucial part, for us, of the songwriting process," Mumford explained. "[The songs] always change when we play them live; the dynamics change a lot. When you play it to a new room, you're playing it to new ears, and you're listening to the song through their ears. So it's a really great way to feel the song out."

What are you expecting from the new Mumford album? Let us know in the comments.

[Smells Like News] The Wanted's 'Chasing The Sun' Chosen For 'Ice Age 4' Soundtrack

The Wanted have just nabbed themselves the lead single on the "Ice Age: Continental Drift" soundtrack. They tweeted that their current track, "Chasing the Sun," was hand-picked for the family-friendly summer release.

"Incredibly excited to have 'Chasing the Sun' be a part of the Ice Age 4 Soundtrack #TheWantedOnIceAge," they announced on Thursday (May 3). "Be sure to see Ice Age 4 on 13th of July #TheWantedOnIceAge."

Shortly after tweeting the news, fans began re-tweeting the hashtag again and again to help spread the message.

The fourth film in the "Ice Age" franchise will hit theaters on July 13 and is already busting with pop-star swag thanks to several key castings. Everyone from Nicki Minaj to Drake to Jennifer Lopez has a part in the animated feature, which also stars Seann William Scott, Josh Peck, Keke Palmer, Peter Dinklage, Aziz Ansari, Heather Morris and others.

This time around, the film's protagonists, Manny (Ray Romano), Diego (Denis Leary) and Sid (John Leguizamo), go off on a new adventure where they meet up with pirates while exploring a new land.

"They knew I liked animation, they knew I liked to do voices, and so they said they were doing that so I thought, 'This is amazing,' " Minaj told MTV News about her role of Steffie in the 3-D movie last year. "The original role that I was up for I didn't get. So I said, 'Oh, OK, whatever.' I was really mad, and the next thing you know, they called me and they said, 'We wrote in a part just for you 'cause we really want you to be a part of this movie.' "

Check out everything we've got on "Ice Age: Continental Drift."

[Smells Like News] Eva Green Visits “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Stepping out for some press duties, Eva Green was spotted at the “ Jimmy Kimmel Live†studios in Hollywood, California last night (May 2).

The gorgeous French actress was all smiles as she greeted fans and shutterbugs upon her exit and hopped into a chauffeured car.

During her interview with Kimmel, Ms. Green talked about coming to America for the first time when she was a teenager.

“The first time I came to the US, I was fifteen. I went to Long Island. My parents used to send me for a summer exchange, and I stayed with a family in Long Island.â€

“I had to go to a school in the morning to learn English. And I felt like I was on a TV series or something, like ‘Saved By The Bell.’ It was amazing because they had lockers, and in France we don’t have lockers. We had to carry enormous backpacks with all of our books.â€

[Smells Like News] 'American Idol' Report Card: Joshua Ledet Scores, Hollie Cavanagh Moves On Up

Top 5 took on British tunes and songs of the '60s on Wednesday night's 'Idol.'
By James Montgomery

Another night, another double-dip on "American Idol," as the top 5 tackled both British tunes and songs from the 1960s. (Does Nigel Lythgoe just randomly pick theme weeks out of a top hat or something?) And while the headline remained the same — shockingly, Joshua Ledet killed it — the subtext of Wednesday night's show was where things really started to get interesting.

Hollie Cavanagh showed she's still got plenty of fight left. Jessica Sanchez continued her transformation from a genuine singing machine into an actual machine. Skylar Laine remained a dark-horse contender. And Phillip Phillips just did whatever the heck he wanted to. Yes, with just a few weeks left in the competition, the race for the season 11 crown is officially on.

And as always, we were watching, notepads in hand, ready to dole out some grades for the remaining "Idol" hopefuls. You can probably guess who's at the top of the class ... but who might be packing their bags and headed for boarding school? Read on to find out!

Joshua Ledet: When the judges are saying you're one of the best "Idol" contestants of all time (not to mention one of the best singers "of the past 50 years"), you must be doing something right. Once again, Ledet lapped the competition, getting big and brassy with the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," and then completely, totally, absolutely slaying the Bee Gee's "To Love Somebody" ... in the night-closing slot, nonetheless. That performance touched off a wave of complimentary one-upsmanship from the judges, culminating in J.Lo dropping that "past 50 years" line (for the record, she's 42). And you know what? That praise is deserved: Ledet's the best singer on the show — by a mile — and unlike some of his fellow hopefuls, he brings genuine emotion to each and every song. I can't wait until he's voted off in, like, two weeks, so America can get the Skylar/Phil Phillips matchup they so desperately desire. Grade: A

Hollie Cavanagh: Yesterday, I joked (for not so nice reasons) that "Idol" producers stacked the deck in her favor by choosing British/'60s songs ... unaware, of course, that HCav would actually deliver the goods. Sure, her version of Ike & Tina's "River Deep, Mountain High" was heavy on award-show histrionics, but she did the song justice — or "wore it out," according to Randy — and while she may have lacked some fire, you cannot deny she sang it perfectly. Then she knocked it out of the park with Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love," coming through in the clutch with a performance that was restrained and refined on one verse, big and brave the next. It was probably her best moment on the show ... good enough to make Randy invoke he-who-shall-not-be-named (Simon Cowell) live on the air! Is it possible Hollie's staging a comeback? B+

Skylar Laine: I was fired up when Little Steven talked her into doing CCR's "Fortunate Son," which shows you how much I know: Skylar never really seemed to be comfortable with the song, starting rough and barely improving from there (though the ending was nice, I suppose). She rebounded slightly with Dusty Springfield's "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," which showed that she doesn't have to be in attack mode all the time. I still think she's a dark horse to win this whole thing, but middling performances like these aren't doing her any favors. Then again, neither is Steven Tyler complimenting her "boot scoot." C+

Jessica Sanchez: Clearly rattled since her near-elimination a few weeks back, J.Sanch continued her slide on Wednesday night with a pair of performances that were big on notes but largely bereft of actual emotion (did she and Hollie switch bodies or something?!?). Her take on Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" was appropriately over-the-top but lacked real passion, which Randy actually picked up on — way to be awake, dawg! — while J.Lo chose to ignore it. Steven's take? "The only thing that gives experience a run for its money is a 16-year-old." Gross, dude. Her version of Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful" was most notable for its goofy stage design — is she starting a coven or something? — and the one big note she hit. And that's why I think Sanchez is living on borrowed time: She can outsing pretty much anybody, but the connection just isn't there. Then again, that's usually what happens when you're 16 and your biggest concern is, lik! e, the prom. C–

Phillip Phillips: Not the best of nights for Phil-Squared, who laid it up with the Box Tops' "The Letter," and then bricked it big-time on the Zombies' "Time of the Season." The former was notable mostly for being exactly the same thing he's been doing for, like, 13 weeks now (the judges, of course, praised him for his "uniqueness"), only with more horn players added for no good reason. The latter, which saw him attempt to explore "melody," was pitchy and pinched and really pretty pained ... then again, he totally got to work a sweet jam sesh in there for a second, bro. At this point, it's pretty clear PP only does what PP wants, so how far can sheer handsomeness carry him? Oh, probably all the way to the title. C–
